Pronounce It Right

Know how to say it before you have to.

Type a name, food, place, brand, word, or phrase. Pronounce It Right shows you how to say it, where the stress goes, and how to make unfamiliar sounds — with guidance adapted to the language you already speak. When the spelling alone can't settle a reading (a name especially), it says so instead of guessing.

Overview

Pronounce It Right maps unfamiliar words to sounds you already know in your native language. The guidance changes depending on whether you speak English, Spanish, Mandarin, or Arabic — because the tricky parts are different for each speaker. Names get particular care: a spelling doesn't prove how a specific person says their own name, so the guide offers the common reading plus a respectful way to ask, rather than asserting certainty it doesn't have.

How to use it

1. Type the word, name, or phrase — this is the only required field.
2. Optionally pick what kind of thing it is: Name, Food/Drink, Place, Brand, Music/Art, Science/Medical, Phrase, or Other.
3. Select your native language — this calibrates every sound comparison and mouth-position tip to your ear.
4. Add optional context (e.g. 'ordering at a French restaurant', 'my coworker's name') when spelling alone doesn't settle the reading.
5. Review the guide: phonetic spelling, stress/tone/rhythm (whichever applies), things to watch out for, and — for names — a script for asking someone to confirm.
6. Use Batch mode to look up 2–10 words at once — great for travel prep or restaurant menus.
7. Tap any word in your history to re-look it up instantly.

Example

Scenario: You're going to an Italian restaurant and want to order without second-guessing yourself.

What you do: Switch to Batch mode, select Food/Drink, enter: Gnocchi, Bruschetta, Prosciutto, Chianti.

Result: Four pronunciation cards with phonetic spelling, the sound each one trips up for an English speaker specifically, and a flag on any word whose reading genuinely depends on context you haven't given.

Tips

• Your native language selection matters — a Spanish speaker needs different guidance than a Korean speaker for the same word.
• For a person's name, the guide gives the common reading when one exists plus a respectful script for confirming it — spelling alone can't tell you how someone says their own name.
• When a reading could go more than one way, the guide says so and explains what context would settle it, instead of picking one and hoping.
• IPA notation is hidden by default but available if you read it — tap 'Show IPA' in the result.
• 'Hear it' speaks the exact IPA transcription shown above, not a guess from the raw spelling — so it only appears when the guide was confident enough to produce genuine IPA, and it's a convenience, not proof of the correct reading.
