It's not just fake reviews. Here are the structural reasons real five-star products disappoint — and how to read past them.

You bought it because it had 4.7 stars and 30,000 reviews. It arrived. It was bad. Not catastrophically bad — just disappointing in ways the reviews never mentioned. Now you're returning it and wondering how 30,000 people gave this thing five stars when the cable doesn't fit, the buttons stick, and it sounds like a hairdryer. Most reviews are written before the product fails

People review when the product arrives, not after they've used it for six months. "I love this!" written on day one is a real review and also tells you nothing about how it holds up. The product that fails after eight weeks has eight weeks of glowing reviews and very few angry ones — because the angry ones haven't been written yet. To read past this, sort reviews by oldest first and read the ones from a year or two ago. Those are the ones written by people who used the product long enough to know.

Negative reviews get filtered by the platform's incentives

Platforms make money when products sell. The recommendation algorithm tends to surface five-star reviews and bury one-stars. Even without manipulation, the user interface is built so you see the praise first and have to dig for the criticism. The product looks better than it is even with no fakery — the system is showing you a curated subset. Reading the bad reviews requires actively clicking past the good ones, which most people don't do.

Reviewers grade on relative effort, not absolute quality

A $25 desk fan from a no-name brand getting five stars doesn't mean it's great — it means it's better than people expected for the price. Reviews are graded against expectations, and cheap products have low expectations. The same product at twice the price would get three stars. When you're shopping, mentally re-rate every review against what the product cost; the implied quality is often lower than the star rating suggests.

Critical use cases aren't represented

Most reviewers use the product for the easy use case — the dish rack on a flat counter, the headphones in a quiet room, the laptop bag for short trips. Your use case might be the hard one — the dish rack on the warped counter, the headphones on a noisy plane, the bag for multi-day travel. The reviews telling you it's great are probably telling you it's great at the easy thing. Search the reviews for your specific use case to find the small subset that actually applies.

Brand reviews leak across products

Big brands maintain their average partly by having a few hit products inflate the rating across their listings. The new model with 4.6 stars might have inherited those stars from the previous model — Amazon and other platforms sometimes consolidate reviews across product versions. Check whether the review history aligns with the product version you're looking at. If most reviews are from before the current version launched, you're reading a different product's praise.
